It looks like Fort Frances isn’t the only place that’s developed a love for 3-on-3 hockey.
In fact, more than 75 teams from throughout the region will be gathering this weekend for a tournament in Thunder Bay.
A handful of local teams will be making the trip, including a pair of squads that could be found taking part in a scrimmage Monday night at the Ice for Kids Arena here.
Players from the ’92 and ’94 Bantam ‘AA’ teams hit the ice as a warm-up for the event, which will run from Friday afternoon until Sunday.
Lori Shortreed was one of the parents on hand for the informal game as her son, Jamison, will be making the trip as a goalie.
“It’s just fun hockey,” she remarked. “Playing 3-on-3, it really comes down to what’s between the helmet. You have to be fast, but you also have to be smart.”
The 3-on-3 format has spawned entire leagues in southern Ontario, and seems to be spreading thanks to the appeal of the fast pace and ability to develop one-on-one skills.
Locally, the inaugural three-week, 20-team league was a wild success, leaving organizers the chance to expand for next season.
