The Churchill Trojans claimed the NWOSSAA senior boys’ basketball crown over the weekend here, upending the host Muskies in a pair of high-scoring games.
The visitors jumped out to an 18-6 lead in the first quarter of the second game of the best-of-three series Saturday morning and closed the half leading 30-17.
Churchill pulled out to a 55-28 lead after three quarters, then finished off the home side by a final score of 70-45 to grab a berth at the all-Ontarios next month.
Garnet Cornell led the Muskies with eight points. Morgan Anderson and Talbot Johnson had seven apiece while Joey Theriault netted six.
The Trojans were lead by guard Edwin Fui, with 29 points, and big forward Matt Schmidt (14).
The outcome was similar in Friday night’s opener as the Trojans go off to a quick start, building a 34-17 lead at the half en route to a 72-48 victory.
Muskie top scorers in that one were Theriault with 19 points, Travis Stromness (11), Jeremy Strain (seven), and Dexter Hunsperger (five).
Schmidt (with 22) and Fui (19) lead the Churchill attack.
The Trojans now advance to the all-Ontarios coming up March 3-5 in Oshawa.
