Sturgeon Creek School to be saluted

Teachers from the primary division at Sturgeon Creek School in Barwick will be recognized at tonight’s Rainy River District School Board meeting for their development of a professional learning community there.
Vicki Ogilvie, MaryAnn Haw, Krista Williams, Sherri Hay, and Kim Walter will earn the monthly Recognition of Excellence Award for their work.
In his article “What is a Professional Learning Community?”, Richard Dufour explains to be a true professional learning community, the community members must adhere to three “big ideas”:
•ensures that student learning is the focus;
•recognizes that they must work together to achieve their collective goal of learning for all students; and
•judges their effectiveness on the basis of results for students.
A report to the board states these teachers, supported by communication assistant Laura Mutz, embrace what it means to be a professional learning community.
“Their love of students and teaching, devotion to student learning, commitment to helping each other, their dedication and hard work are exemplary,” it adds.
The group will tell the board how their work together has impacted them professionally—and how it has impacted their students.
Also at tonight’s meeting, which gets underway at 7 p.m. in the board office at Robert Moore School here, the board will:
•hear an update on the kindergarten program, highlighting JK/SK registration;
•receive reports on “Developing Partnerships with Parents” and the “Principal/Vice-Principal Mentoring Pilot Project”;
•hear reports from the Finance Committee, the Special Education Advisory Committee, the Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee, and the Policy Committee; and
•receive a personnel report updated to February, 2008.
