Thunder Bay’s VP Bearcats took first place in last weekend’s Bantam ‘A’ hockey tournament at the Memorial Sports Centre, beat the Dryden Senators 4-1 in the final.
While local teams were shut out of the championship battle at their own tournament, parents and fans had to settle for an all-Fort ‘B’ final as the Holmlund Leafs doubled Kennedy’s K-9s 4-2 earlier Sunday.
Jamie McKiel netted two goals for the Leafs, with Cole Godbout and Dustin Eyolfson netting the others.
Timothy Metke and Nikolas Jourdain replied for the K-9s.
The Canadian Tire Sabres also came away with some consolation, stomping the Ignace Phantoms 5-1 to capture the ‘C’ final of the 12-team tournament.
Jake Smith led the Sabres with a pair of goals while Nicholas Kaun, Jesse Carmody, and Dylan Grinsell added singles.
Fort Frances’ other entry, the Wal-Mart Thrashers, had a rougher trip through the tournament—suffering two shutout losses and a tie before falling to Ignace 6-3 in the semi-finals.
Up next at the Memorial Sports Centre is the local PeeWee ‘AA’ tournament, which runs Friday through Sunday.
