Muskie girls go 1-2 at home tourney

The Muskie junior girls’ basketball team went 1-2 as hosts of a six-team tournament on the weekend.
The girls opened play Friday with a 21-9 win over Red Lake but then fell to Hammarskjold in a close 21-17 match.
Then they were routed 31-5 by the St. Patrick Saints on Saturday.
“For getting those young girls that floor time, it was a good weekend,” Muskie head coach Dan Bird said. “We got a little under a month for our Grade 9s to really pick up.”
The girls are following their home tournament with one in Thunder Bay this coming weekend. Bird said he hoped the tough, unfamiliar opposition would harden his team a little.
“We’re not where we want to be at this point in the season,” he noted. “I know we got the team to turn this around . . . and I know it’ll happen, I’m confident it’ll happen.”
The tournament was made up of the six teams (Kenora and Dryden were the two squads the Muskies did not face) playing three matches each over the two days.
