Town council gave the thumbs up to three of four requests from the Fort Frances Jr. Sabres hockey team after approving a report from the Community Services executive committee at last night’s regular meeting.
The Sabres will pay the youth resident rate for ice rentals (as opposed to the non-resident rate), and players only will have to pay the student rate less 25 percent when using fitness services at the Memorial Sports Centre up until April 15, 2008.
The town also will install “Home of the Sabres” signs at the east and west entrances to town. Cost of the signs would be shared equally.
While council denied the Sabres’ revenue-sharing request with Carol’s Canteen for regular-season games, it will waive the town’s rental charge for Carol’s Canteen for any food services provided at Sabres’ beer gardens (if the Sabres are successful in obtaining a liquor licence).
Also at last night’s meeting, town council:
•received input on the 2008 budget from Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce president Christine Denby and local resident Larry Cousineau, who spoke at the meeting, and in letter form from the local Business Improvement Association;
•received a presentation from Dave Murray, regional manager for Abitibi-Consolidated Inc., regarding sustainable forest management;
•directed Mayor Roy Avis to send a letter to Bearskin Airlines congratulating the company on its 45th anniversary;
•approved a request from the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration to proclaim Oct. 15-21, 2007 as “Citizenship Week” in the Town of Fort Frances; and
•passed a bylaw to appoint BDO Dunwoody as auditor for the Town of Fort Frances for a two-year term commencing Jan. 1, 2007 through Dec. 31, 2008.
