No new fires were reported yesterday in the Northwest Region.
The fire hazard remains “low” in most areas except the west end of the Kenora and Fort Frances districts, where it has climbed to “moderate.”
One new fire was reported Sunday in the Kenora District, northwest of Kenora. It is now “out.”
Otherwise it was a quiet weekend.
This scaling down of fire activity has allowed staff to do work on remote fire bases and main fire bases, winterizing outbuildings, pulling in equipment that had been cached at the remote bases, and preparing for the final stages of the fire season, which officially ends Oct. 31.
Despite recent cooler weather which has dropped the fire hazard, there still may be some hazards related to dry weather, dead vegetation, and residential and recreational activity before the season ends.
People are reminded that under the Forest Fires Prevention Act of Ontario, they are to follow certain guidelines with outdoor fires.
Brush and grass fires are to be started no sooner than two hours before sunset and be out no later than two hours after sunrise.
Campfires for cooking and warmth must be kept small and be attended at all times, and put dead out before leaving the site.
