The 11th-annual Bassin’ for Bucks fishing tournament took place last weekend on Whitefish Bay at Sioux Narrows, with a number of anglers from the region participating and placing.
First place went to Alex Keszler and Wayne Wagner, of Winnipeg and St. Andrews, Man., with a three-day total of 56.50 pounds, but second place went to Joe Pritchett (Kenora) and Hiram Archibald (Sioux Narrows) with 52.68.
Brian McNanney (Sioux Narrows) and Jeff Baker (Kenora), two relative unknowns in the tournament, came up with a 50.83-pound total to finish in third place.
James Asplund (Fort Frances) was the highest-ranked angler from Rainy River District. The 47.57-pound total he landed with partner Jess Swenson (Sioux Narrows) earned the team 12th place.
John Crane and Andy Anderson of Bemidji, Mn. landed the biggest largemouth of the tournament—a 5.96-pounder on Day 3. Connor and Del Burton of Kenora had the biggest smallmouth, a whopping 6.18-pounder, also caught on the third day.
The annual smallmouth/largemouth tournament, in which anglers are rewarded handsomely for daily bags as well as grand totals, drew 120 teams, a strong number of which are residents of Kenora and host Sioux Narrows.
