Bill Michl inspired an entire district last October when he ran 60 miles from Rainy River to Fort Frances in one day to kick off the “Just Imagine” fundraising campaign to purchase a CT scanner for La Verendrye Hospital here.
But long before Mr. Michl hit the pavement, Tom Bruyere has been undertaking his own inspirational journey—walking 20 miles along the River Road to Fort Frances each September in order to raise money for the renal dialysis program at La Verendrye.
He will be at it again for the eighth year this Friday (Sept. 7), along with a growing number of people who now join him for the annual trek, which has raised well over $100,000 so far.
Among those will be Richard Visser, whose late wife, Metta, was the driving force behind getting a dialysis unit here. She lobbied tirelessly—despite her own failing health—to ensure local residents suffering from kidney disease could get treatment “close to home,” rather than enduring several trips a week to Thunder Bay.
Thanks to her efforts, 30 patients from across the region currently are receiving dialysis at La Verendrye, with room for up to six more.
What sets these people apart is their determination to accomplish a goal, no matter how difficult it may be. They persevere despite the odds—and push even harder when the going gets tough.
In a nutshell, they show that one person can make a difference.
Rainy River District is blessed to have so many residents who so willingly give of themselves for the benefit of everyone. Their “power of one” message is truly remarkable—and one we all should take to heart.
