One new fire was reported in the Northwest Region by the end of the day yesterday.
A canoeist in Quetico Park called in the small lightning-caused fire that was burning on an island on Russell Lake.
FireRangers from the Fort Frances Fire Management Headquarters responded and the blaze has been extinguished.
There currently are 11 active fires in the region, covering 204.5 hectares. Four of these fires are in Fort Frances District.
The region has seen a total of 432 blazes, consuming 32,815.9 ha, since the fire season officially began April 1.
In other news, excellent progress continues on Nipigon District fires #85 and #86. Both currently are classified as “under control.”
Rain over the last few days temporarily has reduced the forest fire hazard. However, with the rain came numerous lightning strikes and the potential for new lightning-caused forest fires to occur continues.
It only will take a few days of sunny, dry weather for the forest fire hazard to quickly rebound.
