Sioux Lookout buys train station

The Municipality of Sioux Lookout has finalized the purchase of the former CN/VIA train station which has sat unused and derelict for many years.

This building has substantial historical significance, and its redevelopment will be pivotal in the sustainability and economic well-being of the downtown core.

When it became apparent the owners were having difficulty creating a viable business plan to support the development of the station, Sioux Lookout council seized the opportunity to purchase the building and property.

“We are making applications to the NOHFC, FedNor, and OSTAR RED in the amount of $2.3 million for enhancement projects, which include the station,” said Mayor Poling.

“It is our intent to leverage as much grant money as possible using the station’s potential for collaboration with various agencies, First Nations, and the business community.”

The goal is to tie in the station’s refurbishment with the downtown revitalization and Centennial Park development so there will be a greater draw to the downtown as a “people place.”

That, in turn, will assist in the creation and retention of businesses on Front Street.

To support and place a focus on this endeavour, Sioux Lookout council has approved a mandate for the newly-created Economic Development Commission, whose primary focus will be to oversee the entire process of the station’s redevelopment and management.

The commission will be created much along the lines as the existing and successful Airport Commission model.

It also will have additional economic development roles and functions with the passing of an implementing bylaw in the near future.

So it’s “all aboard” for the downtown revitalization and the train station redevelopment.
