The Sabaskong Cubs, who went just 1-16 during the regular season, upset the third-place Rainy River Royals 6-5 last night on the first night of the Rainy River District Fastball League’s playoffs.
Gus Copenace picked up the win for the cellar-dwelling Cubs.
With the victory, the Cubs now will face the first-place Sight & Sound Wolves on Tuesday (Aug. 14) at 8 p.m. at VanJura.
In other playoff action last night, the second-place Barwick Blue Knights thrashed the Big Island Huskies 7-2.
George Oltsher earned the win, with Barwick’s Jason Wilson and Sean Comegan of Big Island both going deep.
And fifth-place Big Grassy edged the fourth-place Stratton Eagles 2-1, with Jeff Morrison coming away with the win.
The Lightning now head to Barwick on Tuesday while the Huskies will host the Stratton Eagles in the first match in the regulation bracket.
Both games start at 6:30 p.m.
Rainy River, which got a bye in the relegation bracket, will play its next game Thursday, Aug. 16 against the loser of the Wolves/Cubs match.
