Deserving credit

Dear sir:
    The collapse of the highway bridge in Minneapolis made me think about our local bridges. When I first came here, trucks carried three-four cords of wood. Now they carry three times as much.
    Our bridges have a lot to thank to two men, Stan Hyatt and George Jackson, who both spent many years building bridges by “rule of thumb.” During the last war, the U.S. hired them to bridge the Alaskan Highway.
    They were able to use the skill that they learned here in Rainy River District.
    In spite of the increase in loads, we have had very little bridge trouble.
    The Pinewood bridge was not one of theirs, but a proper design and built by engineers. That was the only bridge I have seen collapse here.
