Five new fires were reported in the Northwest Region by 5 p.m. yesterday— all lightning-caused blazes in the districts of Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay, Dryden, Red Lake, and Kenora.
Cloud cover and small amounts of rain reduced the number of new fire starts—compared to the 23 new forest fires that were confirmed in the Northwest Region by day’s end Tuesday.
Most new fires have been confirmed as being caused by lightning that tracked across the region over the past week. FireRangers and waterbombers are working hard with aggressive initial attack action on each new fire.
Most of the blazes were displaying low-moderate fire behaviour and responded well to the firefighting efforts.
Thunderstorms and fresh lightning occurred in much of the region yesterday and as a result, new lightning-caused forest fires are expected throughout the week.
FireRangers, waterbombers, and fire suppression equipment are on high alert ready to respond to new fires.
