Two new fires were reported in the Northwest Region yesterday, the Ministry of Natural Resources fire management headquarters said this morning.
Red Lake Fire #15, located near the community of Deer Lake, required aggressive initial attack in the form of waterbombers and multiple initial attack FireRanger crews.
Aerial suppression operations were able to knock down the flames and allow three FireRanger crews to begin to establish a hoseline on the fire, which is estimated at five hectares in size.
The second blaze occurred about 12 km west of Armstrong in the Thunder Bay District. Thunder Bay Fire #57, which is estimated at 1.0 ha in size, also required aggressive air and ground initial attack efforts.
A third fire of note occurred in the evening hours of Sunday, near the community of Muskrat Dam. This fire—Sioux Lookout Fire #32—displayed very active behaviour and quickly grew to a size of eight ha.
Two heavy CL 415 waterbombers, four FireRanger crews, and an incident commander worked hard through the day yesterday in an effort to bring the blaze “under control.”
Excellent progress is being made on all the active fires in the Northwest Region.
The forest fire hazard currently is “high” across Northwestern Ontario. Under the Forest Fires Prevention Act of Ontario, day burning of brush and grass fires is prohibited. Such fires are to be lit no sooner than two hours before sunset and be out no later than two hours after sunrise.
Campfires are allowed for cooking and warmth, but must be attended at all times and be put dead out before leaving.
If you live within an organized municipality, check with your municipal office before burning.
