Local OPP officer promoted

Fort Frances OPP Inspector Dave Lucas was pleased to announce the appointment of Steve Shouldice as the new staff sergeant for the Fort Frances cluster.
He assumed his new position June 4.
S/Sgt. Shouldice has been policing for 19 years, including eight with the district OPP.
Insp. Lucas said there’s been a need for a staff sergeant at the Fort Frances detachment ever since the amalgamation of the OPP offices here and in Atikokan.
Formerly at the Fort Frances detachment, the first in command was the person who held the title of staff sergeant. But after the amalgamation in January, 2006, the position of inspector was created, which Insp. Lucas has held ever since.
“We now have more officers and the need for this position [staff sergeant] is there,” said Insp. Lucas.
There were 10 other locations across Ontario also looking to hire a staff sergeant so S/Sgt. Shouldice had the option to look elsewhere if he desired.
“I’m excited about the new position and was happy to accept it because this is where I want to be,” he remarked last week.
“I really like the area and the staff here,” he added.
For Insp. Lucas, the decision to promote S/Sgt. Shouldice was equally a “no brainier” because of his knowledge of the area.
“I was very pleased that Steve was interested in the position because he has been policing here for a great amount of time,” said Insp. Lucas.
“Based on his abilities and knowledge of the district, Steve was an excellent choice for promotion.”
S/Sgt. Shouldice now will be the second-in-charge for the detachment, and will assist Insp. Lucas with managing the day-to-day operations in the district.
