A gloomy forecast for Canada Day has organizers wondering how the weather will affect the “Fun in the Sun” activities planned for the day.
The Weather Network is calling for a 100 percent chance of rain here on Sunday, “at times heavy.”
“We have no plan ‘B’ in place,” said FITS committee chair Paul Bock. “We’ll just assess it as things go on.”
The parade is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday, running from the Sorting Gap west along the river to La Verendrye Hospital, where it will turn north on Portage Avenue, then west on Church Street to the Royal Canadian Legion.
Regular FITS activities, including bathtub races, food booths, children’s activities, and the FITS queen crowning, are all set to take place after the parade at Pither’s Point Park.
The day is scheduled to be brought to a close with a spectacular fireworks display at “Seven Oaks.”
Organizer Dawn Booth said she has never encountered any severe weather problems in her years with the FITS committee. In past years, the parade has gone ahead even in the rain.
“We’ve had some interesting weather in the past,” Bock noted.
He said he was hesitant to reschedule events to Monday as some people go back to work that day.
The public is encouraged to not let the threat of rain affect their attendance at FITS events.
