The Town of Fort Frances will not be picking up recyclables at Fort Frances High School.
In a response to a request received two weeks ago from FFHS vice-principal Al McManaman, council Monday night approved a report stating the town isn’t in the business of taking care of recycling at large institutional facilities.
In his report, Operations and Facilities manager Doug Brown said the town was approached by J.W. Walker with a similar request last April and had to turn them down.
“In order to be consistent and treat all ICI [Industrial, Commercial and Institutional] customers equally, the town must respond in a similar fashion,” wrote Brown.
“However, due to the location of the high school property, there are no abutting residential properties.
“Thus, for the high school there is only one option available to have their recyclables collected from their property—arrange directly with Asselin for the curbside collection or recycling materials at a fee established and negotiated between the school and Asselin,” he added.
McManaman had written the town in late April asking for recycling pickup.
“We would like to be able to divert our recyclable materials from the town’s landfill and have it go to a more useful purpose,” he had said at that time.
“Fort Frances High School would like to provide access to recycling services to students and staff as it bears importance from both an educational and environmental standpoint,” he had noted.
Also at Monday night’s meeting, council:
•approved hiring JML Engineering Ltd. to inspect and perform a structural evaluation of Pither’s Point dock at a cost of $9,950;
•passed a bylaw to approve an agreement with the Fort Frances Curling Club with respect to payment of arrears of taxes;

•passed a bylaw to authorize taking title to certain lands in the name of the municipality to declare the lands necessary for municipal purposes and dedicate said lands as a highway (in this case, Canadian Tire Corp. Ltd. is transferring ownership of land at the corner of McIrvine Road to the town so the town can widen the road there);
•passed a bylaw to designate Lots 11 and 12 on Plan SM-60 (910 Smith Ave.);
