A Dryden man escaped injury after a plane he was piloting broke through the ice on Wabigoon Lake near the Yacht Club yesterday.
Dr. Clare Ernewein had landed the Piper Cub he was flying, and was in the process of taxiing back to the Flying Club, when the plane broke through the ice.
Dr. Ernewein was able to exit the aircraft and climb onto the wing until he was rescued.
Two Dryden residents, who were at the Yacht Club at the time, were able to push a 14-ft. aluminum boat out to the plane and bring Dr. Ernewein to the Yacht club, where emergency personnel had arrived.
He was taken to Dryden hospital for examination and was expected to be released shortly afterwards, police noted.
Norman Brown and Ron Saidon are credited for their quick actions in assisting Dr. Ernewein from the potentially-dangerous situation.
The OPP would like to remind people that ice conditions are extremely unsafe at this time of year and the best course of action is to stay off it.
