As many people know, Mine Centre School has a shared reading program, in which students in grades one through six read to one another for half-an-hour every Friday.
They have become known not just for reading books but for challenging principals and bus drivers to both fun–and gross–things.
This year, the group challenged grade one/two teacher Marjorie Hale. She agreed that if the students could read 2,001 books by Dec. 21, she would let them throw pie in her face.
Of course, the group reached their goal and the pie-throwing began!
On Dec. 22, students, staff, and a few guests assembled in the gym for the event. Grade five/six teacher Krista Pruys said a few words to the crowd before everyone realized the star attraction was missing.
It took a couple minutes of chanting her name before Hale walked through the doors.
Pruys guided Hale to her spot behind a cardboard Mrs. Claus with no face. Hale poked her face through the hole and the kids were ready to begin.
About 30 students had a chance to toss a pie in Hale’s face and although some missed her, she had it on her face, in her hair, and down the front of her shirt.
The group wasn’t done yet, though, as three adults lined up for their turn, two of whom ganged up on Hale by one distracting her while the other snuck up and smacked a pie into her face.
The students thought it was great and everyone was laughing. Hale received a round of applause for being such a good sport and she was done fulfilling her end of the challenge.
There are still six months of school left. Who will the students challenge next?

In other school news, students returned Monday after the two-week Christmas vacation and things already are getting busy. A family math night is being planned and plans for the annual winter carnival have gotten underway.
The hot lunch program, prepared by both the student and school council, has started again. Hot lunches are normally available every Tuesday, with the cost depending on what is being served that day.
And mark Jan. 18 on your calendar as the school council will be holding a pancake breakfast at the school.
As always, if you would like to volunteer to help out with any of the above mentioned activities or any other happenings, simply contact the school.
