Muskies hoopsters ground Eagles

The Muskie senior and junior boys’ basketball teams improved to 4-0 at the midway point of the NorWOSSA regular season with solid wins over the visiting Dryden Eagles yesterday afternoon.
It was no contest for the senior hoopsters, who romped to a 75-35 victory. “The game went according to plan,” remarked head coach Paul Noonan.
Although Noonan said his players were hustling, and had the speed and intensity against the Eagles, they did run into some foul trouble.
“By the end of the first quarter, we had 12 fouls called against us,” he noted. “We committed too many reaching fouls.”
John Sivonen led the offensive onslaught with 21 points. Evan Woodland was next with 11, followed by Jock Gemmell (10), Jamie Algie (nine), and Gary Wager (eight).
The seniors next will travel to Winnipeg to play in the John Taylor Piper Classic starting Thursday. They don’t return to NorWOSSA play until Feb. 1.
Meanwhile, the junior boys also kept their perfect season intact after downing the Eagles 33-24 here yesterday.
“We played a little sloppy in the first half but we pulled it together in the second half,” noted head coach. Dave Ashworth head coach of the junior boys.
“Overall, we played well enough to win but we will work on executing on offence and we need more intensity on defence,” he added.
Cullan McGinnis led the black-and-gold with nine points while Kevin Gemmell netted seven and Rick Ricard four.
Kurtis Wepruk, Keith McKay, Matt Basaraba, Skye Lavallie, Anwar Cheblaoui, Mark Buist, and Billy Whitecrowe also had baskets against Dryden.
