The Muskie senior boys’ basketball team continued their domination on the court here yesterday with an 81-40 exhibition win over the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints (Kenora).
John Sivonen led the offensive onslaught with 20 points, followed by Evan Woodland (17), Dan Poperechny and Roy Tighe (eight each), and Jamie Algie and Gary Wager (six apiece).
Mark Mercure, Josh McMahon, Jock Gemmell, and T. Derkson all netted four points.
The black-and-gold was coming off a 53-50 win over the Littlefork Vikings there Friday night but head coach Paul Noonan stressed the game didn’t start out well.
“It was 11-zip before we even got a point,” he noted. “But the guys rallied and tightened their defence and by the second half, [we] were leading 27-25.”
Noonan said the had a 10-point lead by the fourth quarter but the Vikings fought back to tie the game. The Muskies finally iced the victory in the final moments.
“It was a nice victory and we hope to have another game with them here,” he added, noting it easily was their most exciting match of the season thus far.
Sivonen again led the Muskie attack with 16 points, followed by Woodland (15), Algie (11), Gary Wager (seven), and Gemmell (four).
“Jock played extremely well on the boards. He out-rebounded guys two or three inches taller than him,” Noonan said.
The senior boys will return to NorWOSSA action tomorrow in Kenora against the Broncos, then head back up there this weekend for the annual Kenora Invitational Tournament.
