The first-annual “Curl for Cancer” curl-a-thon here Saturday raised more money than organizers imagined and that already has them excited for next year.
“I think so,” said Wendy Derendorf when asked if the event will do well next year. “We will do just as well . . . if not better.”
Derendorf, who co-organized the event with Nadine Johnson and Cheryl Behan, enthused the 80 participants really put their hearts into it.
She said they were expecting to raise about $2,400 and anything over that was a bonus. When the final figures were tallied, the total was almost $9,000.
“We are just thrilled,” enthused Derendorf. “There was a minimum of $100 pledge per team.”
“We ended up with a lot.”
Cheryle Wolff collected the most pledges with $1,006, with Becky Robinson next (more than $600).
Derendorf said the curl-a-thon was organized for fun and because it is a good cause.
“It was nice to see that so many people supported the event,” she noted, adding at least half of the participants were not avid curlers. “There was such great community support.
“In a small town when something needs to be done, we really pull together.”
The 20 rinks, divided into two groups of 10, each played three, four-end games. Teams were awarded half-a-point for each point scored, one point for each end won, and three points for each win.
The Belisle rink took top honours with 27 points, followed by Robinson at 26. Boyd was a close third with 25, followed by Taggart (24.5), Gustafson (20.5), and Ward (19).
Gruttner and Gerstner finished tied with 17 points, followed by Ross (16.5), Allen (14.5), and Swire, O’Dell, and Ogden (14). Rounding out the field was Beecham (13), Behan (12), Crowe (11.5), Loyie (11), MacKinnon (10), Stuart (3.5), and Busch (three).
