Sturgeon Creek holds spring concert

Sturgeon Creek staff and students held their annual spring concert Friday afternoon. It was emceed by Julie McQuaker, who welcomed everyone to the entertainment and proceeded to announce each number.
Beforehand, Jodi Hoskins played several selections to keep the audience listening carefully.
The gym was decorated with cut-out objects of May flowers, butterflies, kites flying, ladybugs, and worms–all relating to spring.
First on the agenda was Vicki Ogilvie’s junior and senior kindergarten rhythm band, which played two numbers, “Rhythm Band March” and “Grandfather’s Clock.”
Maryanne Haw, with the grades 1/2, had two wonderful songs, “Almost Asleep” and “Monkeys.”
Choral reading by the grades 2/3, directed by Jody Bonner-Vickers, clearly expressed themselves in “Copy Cat,” then Maryanne Haw directed the 1/2 class in another choral reading, reciting “Grandfather Frog.”
Piano solos were presented by Katelyn Nielson (“Beauty and the Beast”), Kayla Lauzon (“My Heart Will Go On”), Jay Neilson (“The Magic Man”), Karissa Lauzon (“March of the Dwarfs”), and Kalli Fuhrer (“The Rose”).
Vocal soloist Teila Michl, who has been taking voice training from Renee Martin and performed at the recent district festival of the arts, sang “Bibbety Bobbety Boo.”
Kayla Lauzon then sang “I Hope You Dance,” followed by David Barron, who sung, “To A Wild Rose.”
Barron also won the speech contest at Sturgeon Creek and will be competing at St. Michael’s in Fort Frances at the district level.
Later, David Ogilvie directed the grade 4/5 class in two choir numbers, “My World” and “Music in Your Life.”
The afternoon program concluded with the grades 6/7/8 choir in two selections, “Charlottetown” and “Go Forth with a Song.”
Each person in attendance received a novelty bookmark, which was inscribed, “You can use me as a bookmark, or maybe even a plant poke. I’m meant to be a reminder we’re so glad that you were here.”
And I can say for the audience, we were glad we attended. It was a great performance.
