Race to the finish

Under sunny skies and with temperatures soaring into the teens Celsius, the first-ever Canadian Kitty Cat championships here Saturday almost fell victim to spring.
In fact, the modified races, where machines often top 35 mph, had to be held at 10:30 a.m.–much earlier than organizers wanted to–in order to avoid racing on too soft of a track on Sand Bay near Rusty Myers.
“It was too warm. The track was soft at the end of the day,” said organizer Al Boivin, whose son, Curtis, competed against some three dozen other racers, aged four to 10, hailing from Minnesota, North Dakota, and Ontario.
“Under normal conditions, we would have been fine on March 4, but the day went without a hitch,” Boivin noted.
“[The racers] were happy,” he added. “They weren’t done racing yet.”
Boivin said they’ll definitely run the races here again next year although he suggested they may look at holding them earlier in the season.
“They said they want to come back so we’ll do it again next year.”
Hunter Hougard of Minnestoa was named the driver of the day for his good racing and sportsmanship. The rest of the results are as follows:
