D&A Construction wins ‘C’ final

D&A Construction Midget girls’ hockey team won the ‘C’ final of a tournament in Emo, downing the Red Lake/Ear Falls OPP Polar Bears 6-1 on Sunday.
After Jennifer Krag gave D&A a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, Shannon Koval (assisted by Erin McIvor), Alicia Giles, and Jennifer Caul all tallied in the second to make it 4-0.
Deena James and McIvor rounded out the scoring for D&A in the third. Camille Gillcash replied for Red Lake/Ear Falls.
The Thunder Bay Ice Gators won the ‘A’ crown with a 5-1 win over the Kenora Lake of the Woods Muskies while the Thunder Bay Cougars took the ‘B’ title with a 4-0 shutout over Dryden Husky.
D&A Construction had opened the tournament Friday with a 4-2 loss to the Thunder Bay Ice Gators. They had led 2-1 in the first on goals by Caul and Michelle Veldhuisen but the Gators iced the win with three unanswered markers.
Then they were blanked 1-0 by Bratland’s Husky (Dryden).
Meanwhile, in PeeWee action, the local Floor Coverings International/Skates & Blades team split into two squads for the Emo tournament.
Team #1 finished the tournament with a 1-4 record. They lost 2-0 to the Basic Machine Steelers (Dryden), 3-0 and 7-0 to the Kenora Esso Bees, and 4-0 to the Thunder Bay Demons.
Their lone win was 1-0 over Skates & Blades/International Floor Covering #2. Darcy Smith netted the game-winning goal with 13:30 left in the second period.
Angela Shoemaker earned the shutout in goal.
Team #2 was 0-4 during the weekend, losing to the Demons (17-0), Steelers (7-0), and the Bees (4-2).
Katie Stearns (assisted by Amanda Roy) and Heather Dutton scored against the Bees.
The Steelers ended up winning the PeeWee crown with a 1-0 overtime win over the Demons.
