Brent Tookenay was named the first general manager of the new Borderland Thunder on Friday.
Tookenay, 35, has been an instrumental part in the organizing committee and player scouting for the team since the Superior International Junior Hockey League was formed in February.
“I wanted to be involved in some capacity to get this going because it’ll be great for the area,” he said.
Announcements on other team positions will be unveiled in the coming weeks as they become available, he added.
A native of Nipigon, Tookenay played junior hockey in Thunder Bay and hit the college ice at Bemidji State University in Minnesota.
He spent the last year as an assistant coach with the Fort Frances ‘AA’ Bantam rep team with Thunder assistant coaches Wayne Strachan and Shane Bliss.
His father, Joe, is president of Hockey Northwestern Ontario.
