The Fort Frances Trampoline Club returned home from the Provincial Championships in Etobicoke, Ont. last weekend with new determination and awareness for the sport.
Adam Cumming, Kaela Hahkala, Travis Hahkala, Hillary Morgan, and Laura Chabot, representing the local club, competed against some 200 top-level athletes from such clubs as “Skyriders” of Toronto and “Spring Action” from Ottawa. Both produce world calibre athletes and Olympic coaches.
Other clubs competing included the Kingston Aeros, Free Spirits (Jean Juneau’s club), Hurons, Grand River, North Bay, Twisters, Gym City, Air Devils, Superior (Thunder Bay), Guelph, and Muskoka.
In the men’s provincial two level, Travis Hahkala held his own with a total score of 47.30 for 13th place in the province. Cumming, competing at the same level, was right behind him with a score of 45.40 for 14th spot.
The pair finished ahead of competitors from the Skyriders, Spring Action, and Air Devils.
In the women’s two provincial category, Morgan placed 15th overall with a score of 49.10 while Kaela Hahkala placed 22nd with a score of 46.60. Hahkala moved up a level this past year and had been working on some new moves. She had a strong meet and has great potential for the future.
Chabot, a first time competitor, represented Fort Frances at the provincial one level, and finished in 18th place with a total score of 40.80.
Meanwhile, the athletes are now taking a break from competition and are now preparing for the display on “Pie Day,” which will be held April 29 at the Academy.
Each family of an athlete is being asked to bring a pie to share (preferably homemade) and all classes from the three clubs will perform for their parents, followed by pie, coffee, and a social time.
The Trampoline Club will be making the draw at “Pie Day” for the weekend holiday, generously donated by LaBelle’s Birchpoint Camp and the handmade afghan donated by the late Florence McInnes.
Tickets can be purchased from any members of the club or at the Academy.
