The Borderland men’s soccer association announced the folding of one of its teams last Thursday in hopes of fostering stability for the other four squads.
League co-ordinator Mike Webb said the Gillons’ Predators had forfeited too many games last season, and had only six registered players at the time of their folding.
“As a team and a league, we couldn’t sustain the fifth team,” noted Webb. “It just wasn’t looking good in terms of numbers.”
The league also will implement a 20-player limit on each of the remaining teams–AAA Thunder, ITS, Taggs, and Nova.
Registration has been extended through the end of the month at its current cost of $85. Players signing up after June 1 will have to pay $100.
So far, 35 players have committed–a number Webb said will go up dramatically as the season draws closer. But it’s a trend he hopes to end soon.
“There are players out there that are under the impression they can come out any time without registering,” he said. “We’re trying to get away from that mentality.”
Schedules should be out by today or tomorrow, he added, with the first games to be played next Tuesday at the St. Francis Sportsfield.
