Horticulturalists visit local nurseries

Lowey’s and Hammond’s were hosts to Fort Frances Horticultural Society members this past week.
After viewing the huge display of bedding plants, perennials, etc., many members came away with their arms laden.
Another spring to dig the earth and create a beautiful masterpiece of their yard; what better way to gladden the heart of a gardener.
At the society’s regular meeting this past Monday evening (the fourth Monday of the month), Kathy Haukaas reported the spring plant sale was a big success.
It featured perennials, as well a tomato and pepper plants, houseplants, and anything the members had in excess in their gardens.
Of special note were the gardening aprons worn by the workers, which were decorated at the April meeting in a “Make & Take Workshop.”
The Flower of the Month, a tulip brought by Nellie Shybyski, received “special attention.”
Program chairman Mary Martinson announced the June 26 meeting would feature a presentation by Sharon Strom on “Creating Rooms in your Garden.”
Jean Church, public planting chairman, reported her committee would soon do the planting at the public library. These plants are donated by Lowey’s, and the beds prepared and planted by the society.
As well, Church and a special committee set up for the project will assist Lowey’s with the planting at Rainycrest. These plants are donated by the Rainycrest Auxiliary.
The society also will have a booth at the Seniors’ Lifestyle Fair coming up Friday at the Fort Frances Curling Club. Bev Mylenchuk and committee will offer an insight into the society’s activities, and have small plants and a draw prize for seniors.
Shirley Gadd reported the membership now numbered 72.
Then to top off the evening, Astrid Sobkowicz and committee served coffee and cake for a tasty lunch.
