Joyce Gosselin brought in $2,600 of the $3,200 that was raised by local athletes during the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics here Sunday morning.
Gosselin also was the top fundraiser last year with $1,900.
“We’re very pleased. Joyce goes out every year and raises the most, she’s a real go-getter,” said Jeanine Shine, who helped co-ordinate the torch run locally.
“She went over what she raised last year.”
Gabby Hanzuk, a coach of the Special Olympic athletes here, said she wasn’t surprised by the amount of money Gosselin collected.
“She loves doing stuff like that, she thinks it’s fun to raise money and she’s very friendly,” said Hanzuk. “She’s very competitive. We call her our ‘Fund-raising Athlete.’”
The money raised this year will go towards such things as buying equipment and uniforms for the athletes as well as expenses to attend out-of-town competitions.
Additional money also was raised through a combined effort by the local OPP, customs, and CN police, which will be sent to Toronto to be distributed around the province. While an exact figure had yet to be determined by yesterday afternoon, it was estimated that around $500 was raised.
The run, which went from McDonald’s restaurant to Safeway, attracted some 30-35 participants, who had the choice of walking, biking, running, or blading along the 2.5-km route.
