I would like to ask Mr. Kielczewski a question, with some comments later.
Mr. Kielczewski, how did you feel when you were pulling fish, out of the water, by the hundreds. Day after day, etc. But then, you had the “right” under a “commercial fishing licence.”
Well, we have a “right” too, under a treaty (treaties should never be ignored). Can you imagine if we all (status people) exercised our “right” to hunt and fish. I could actually hear the public outcry.
Sure, there are the abusers. Wherever you find people, you’ll find someone trying to “beat the system.” It is not good, but it’s human nature.
Do you really think that we’ll ever reach equality? I don’t think so; we will always be the “underdog.” It will never happen in our generation. Maybe, three or four generations down the line. Attitudes have to change.
Chief Jim Leonard and his people are restoring a long-time tradition, which started when the first settlers came into our country. I personally think this annual event is a great gesture, which people look forward to.
So keep it up, Manitou people, despite a few negative remarks.
These are my opinions and shouldn’t reflect on others.
Thank you,
