The Muskie senior girls’ basketball team showed they could hold their own during a tournament last weekend in Thunder Bay, winning two of three games there.
“We did quite well. The girls played well,” head coach Paul Noonan enthused.
The team started things off on a good note, dumping St. Thomas Aquinas (Kenora) by a score of 54-25.
Siobhan Devlin led the way with a season-high 20 points. Sarah Noonan added 14 points while Chrissy Thomson netted eight.
“There was some good scoring during that game,” noted Noonan.
“We were able to work the inside game against them,” he added. “At halftime the score was close but during the second half, [we] started to pull away.”
The Muskies then made it two-straight with a 49-31 victory over St. Ignatius. Sarah Noonan led the team with 23 points.
“They had some taller girls on that team so we were scoring from the outside,” coach Noonan stressed. “There was some even scoring from the other players.”
But the black-and-gold couldn’t pull out a victory in their final game against Ignace, seeing their shooting turn cold en route to a 45-36 defeat.
“Basically, Sarah [Noonan] had 21 points and the next highest scorer in that game was Siobhan Devlin with five,” coach Noonan noted.
“They shut us down,” he remarked. “It was close all game then in the fourth quarter, they pulled away.”
Noonan noted one of the team’s weakness was that they weren’t effectively moving the ball around. They’ll be working on their inside game and getting the guards open in practice this week, he added.
The senior girls return to action this Friday afternoon here against Beaver Brae (Kenora). Then teams from Sioux Lookout, Dryden, and Kenora will be in town for another tournament this weekend.
“It is going to be interesting because we haven’t played any of the teams that are coming down here yet,” noted Noonan.
