‘Operation Pumpkin’ looking to curb Hallowe’en mischief

Vandals and thieves beware!
The Fort Frances OPP once again will get a helping hand from the community Monday when “Operation Pumpkin” hits the streets in an effort to curb mischief associated with Hallowe’en.
“It’s a Community Policing Committee initiative to reduce vandalism on ‘Gate Night,’” Sgt. Don Robertson said yesterday, noting the extra forces have patrolling the streets here every Oct. 30 for more than 10 years.
“The officers even now are keeping a closer eye for [theft or vandalism of Hallowe’en decorations]. But for ‘Operation Pumpkin,’ we have a significant commitment on that night,” he added.
More than 50 volunteers will be involved in “Operation Pumpkin” this year, with North Air Services, Rainy Lake Amateur Radio Club, Rainy River District School Board, the Fort Frances Volunteer Bureau, and OPP auxiliary members working with police on patrol that night.
Volunteers are encouraged not to intervene in any possible crime but instead contact police in case of trouble.
“Any kind of business, like North Air, who are out on the street can contact us if they see anything,” said Sgt. Robertson.
Meanwhile, the Heritage Depot (old CN station) will serve as a warm shelter for anyone out on patrol to drop by for some hot coffee. School board volunteers will monitor schools around town.
But Sgt. Robertson added anyone can report any vandalism they see by calling 1-888-310-1122. “And if you have a cell phone, you can get us by calling *OPP (*667),” he said.
Sgt. Robertson said he’s confident “Operation Pumpkin” would be another success. “This has been going on for over 10 years, and it’s worked pretty well,” he remarked.
While a rash of thefts and acts of vandalism were investigated by police here last October, there has been very little similar activity so far this year.
