Tryouts for the Muskie junior boys’ basketball team are now done and the head coach said he’ll be putting a strong squad on the court this season.
“[Tryouts] were really good–we had over 30 kids try out,” enthused Dave Ashworth. “There was a lot of interest.”
Ashworth also admitted it was tough to pare the team down. “I don’t like cutting kids. We have a lot of kids with good attitudes and good athletics,” he said.
“There won’t be any more cuts made to the team,” he added. “Even with 15 players, we are bound to have some injuries.”
He also said the players have their work cut out for them with only two weeks of practice before the season gets underway.
“It will be a full NorWOSSA season against Kenora, Dryden, and Fort Frances,” noted Ashworth. “There are a lot of tentative tournaments in Thunder Bay but I don’t think they are having teams.”
And Ashworth is enthusiastic about the upcoming season because of the team he has. “We have a lot of experienced players which will make up the starters and some strong grade nines.”
In practice over the next few weeks, Ashworth said he would be working mainly on basic offence and defensive schemes. “I don’t want to throw too much at them,” he remarked.
