Local judoist wins bronze

Jared Catholique-Bruyere travelled to Toronto last month to participate in the Ontario Open, which also was the qualifier for the provincial judo team.
In his first fight, Catholique-Bruyere took on Justin Yuen of Regina but lost due to a choking penalty.
“When he lost his first fight, that put him on the ‘B’ side,” noted his father, Wallace Bruyere.
Catholique-Bruyere won his next fight by default when Andrew Fulford of Stouffville withdrew from the competition, giving the local judoist a 1-1 record and a bout with his longtime nemesis, Christian Zelensky of Kenora.
“[Jared] pinned him, which allowed him to win the fight instantly,” noted his dad.
Catholique-Bruyere finished the tournament with the bronze medal but it was not enough to put him on the provincial team. As such, he’ll head back to Toronto on Jan. 27-28 for another qualifying meet to try to make the squad.
He’ll face David Harrington and Thomas Filter, both of Ottawa, for the gold medal.
“It will be a do-or-die match to make the Ontario team,” noted Wallace Bruyere, who added his son has fought both of them in previous years.
“If he makes the team, he will go to Kelowna, B.C. in April to represent Ontario.”
