Juniors third at Thunder Bay tourney

The Muskie junior girls’ basketball finished third at a tournament in Thunder Bay last weekend after dumping Fort William Collegiate 35-16.
It was all over practically after the opening tip-off, with the black-and-gold jumping out to a commanding 22-4 halftime lead.
Carling Barton and Danielle McGee led the way with eight points each.
The Muskies were relegated to the third-place game after losing 34-26 to host Hammarskjold. They had trailed by just four points with two minutes to go but the Viking shooters got hot down the stretch to seal the win.
The Vikings eventually won the tournament with a 44-27 victory over the Churchill Trojans (also from Thunder Bay).
McGee was the top Muskie scorer against Hammarskjold with eight points while Trista Barker, Jamie Whitecrow, and Allison Hyatt each added six.
The Muskies played a strong defensive game to down the St. Ignatius Falcons of Thunder Bay 35-26 to open action last Friday. Linda Zimmerman led the way with 10 points while McGee added eight.
Meanwhile, in senior girls’ basketball action across the city at St. Ignatius, the Muskies were ousted from further contention after dropping a 59-46 decision to the host Falcons on Saturday.
Sarah Noonan led the Muskies with 20 points.
It was the Muskies’ second-straight loss of the day, falling 50-43 to Hammarskjold earlier. They were in foul trouble for much of that game, eventually losing Siobhan Devlin, Kelly Crawford, and Heather Mihichuk.
Noonan again led the way with 23 points.
The Muskies had opened the tournament Friday with a dominating 51-21 win over St. Thomas Aquinas (Kenora), paced again by a game-high 21 points from Noonan.
