Fort team wins 3-on-3 tourney

A squad of Bantam ‘A’ players from various local teams came out on top of their division at a 3-on-3 hockey tourney in Thunder Bay over the weekend.
The team lost its first game 8-4 to the Kenora Crush but then rebounded to win its next five, including getting revenge on the Crush with an 8-6 victory in the final.
The team, coached by Elroy Cheesequay and John Milling, included Chris Cousineau, Keith McTavish, Andrew Gobeil, Brandon Sinclair, Jeff Gustafson, Jeff Cridland, Andrew Milling, Dustin Brown, Jordan Sinclair, and goalie Brady Caul.
The 3-on-3 format saw teams play two 14-minute periods per game, except in the final, where they played for 16 minutes a period.
“They played excellent hockey,” said Cheesequay. “It was non-stop, fast hockey. There were no whistles, nothing.
“Nobody complained about ice time,” he smiled.
“It was so fast,” echoed Milling. “We made changes on the fly, no whistles.”
He added that playing a different style of hockey was a learning experience and a real test for the team.
“Our success speaks volumes to the quality of hockey players in Fort Frances,” said Milling.
Cheesequay noted he’d like to see more players from the area go to the annual tournament, which is a fundraiser for Thunder Bay Regional Health Centre.
The 3-on-3 tourney featured tournament play in different age brackets, ranging from six- to 60-year-olds.
