Committee clears first set of flood claims

About 30 district residents who filed claims for damages stemming from June’s flooding could see their cheques in the mail soon.
The local Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program (ODRAP) committee processed its first set of claims at a meeting here Wednesday night.
“There’s a few of those claims where details will have to be discussed further between claimants and the adjusters, but we’re off to a good start,” local ODRAP office manager Ian Mollett said Friday.
“The hope is we’ll be able to deal with a lot more at the next meeting—60 or more,” he added.
That meeting is slated Sept. 4.
Mollett said that as of the Aug. 15 deadline to file claims, 610 were submitted—totalling $7.5 million in losses.
“But some people had rough estimates when they made their claims, and are now getting more accurate assessments of damage, so that total will change,” noted Mollett.
A total of $410,000 has been dispersed so far in advance payments to claimants.
In the meantime, the four adjusters on the job have been busy looking at everything from homes here in town to farms and businesses across the district.
Mollett urged residents to be patient, adding it probably will take four months for them to look at everything.
