The McDonald Family
By Jean Bolen
First there came Ronald a bright sunny lad
Colin came next the joy of his Dad
Don and Frank were soon to follow
then a sister Mildred joined the four boys
Richard then joined the clan
Stanley soon came, a fat chubby wee man
Kenneth was next, his Mom’s pride and joy
a sister Lena kept Mom on the run
Then Doris Jean was the last of the clan
but Mom and Dad didn’t know the master plan
two years passed . . . . then
Rod Edward was born,
he near killed his Mom, the 11 lb. boy
Dr. Young was by Mom’s side,
the older family members looked on with pride
at Jean and Rod the last of the last of the clan
from 1900 to 2002
all we can say is what a crew!
The McDonalds are hosting a family reunion this weekend at Sunny Cove Camp and friends are more than welcome to attend.
“I’ve been working hard and I’m really looking forward to it,” said Jean Bowman (née McDonald), the second youngest of 13 children.
Her family came to the district in the early 1990s and settled in the Emo area, between Kingsford and Mather townships.
“We’re expecting about 80 or 82 family members from Ear Falls, B.C., and Thunder Bay,” Bowman said.
They’ll be playing ball, riding pontoon boats, and hosting barbecues from Thursday to Saturday.
The McDonalds owned the first Model T in the district and housed tame twin black cubs, moose, a turtle, and goats on the farm
“I drank goat milk. Maybe that’s why I still have all my teeth,” she laughed. All the children, except the youngest, were born with the help of a midwife.
The reunion gets underway tomorrow at 9 a.m. They’ll be serving a potluck and friends and family are welcome to drop by.
Pipers are expected on Friday for Family Day. “I’ve got my kilt,” Bowman said.
The reunion wraps up Saturday at 4 p.m.
