I am certain that we could all agree that the weather we had on Friday and Saturday could have continued this week.
We have had more rain today than we had all of October. If the apps are correct, we are going to be floating by the weekend. The theme has been rain for all of our fall cattle sales. This is going to make it difficult to move cattle and get trailers in and out of most yards.
Thankfully, after tomorrow I will have all my cattle out of my corral. I have three going to the abattoir, and I will run home and deliver the last of my calves to their new home. I moved my replacement heifers and my butcher animals to their winter yard on Sunday. They have plenty of space to stay high and dry. I have a cull cow that will stay with them until her abattoir date in early December.
I am feeding my cows up in the bush. They should be able to stay clean and dry, but taking the tractor and wagon to them with hay does make a mess. I am trying to move them around for each feeding to hopefully not make it too muddy. Hard to believe just a few months ago we were dry and burning up, and now this!
I am extremely thankful that last week the crew from Blackhawk Simmentals showed up and cleaned out my shed and hauled manure. I am certainly thankful they made it last week because this week might have been a complete write-off.
There is an area that they had to leave because it was too wet to get to. They even took the back gate off of my maternity pen and welded it for me. I am so thankful for all they did. My uncle hauled gravel and fixed up my muddy driveway as well. What a successful week!
Last week the Beef Farmers of Ontario hosted a town hall meeting in the Emo Legion. We had 23 people attend. I am happy for those of you who took the time to show up, but I will be honest: I was disappointed we didn’t have a few more people attend. These people are working hard with your Check-Off dollars and would like to share what they are doing. I find it frustrating when events are planned and booked, but we don’t show up.
My mom was off to see Maddie and Marlee play this weekend, so I had both dogs and a big list of jobs. They were tired out, but I still dressed them both up for the trick-or-treaters. I really missed Bettie because I often had matching outfits for her. We had 10 trick-or-treaters, and the dogs loved everyone. The weather certainly cooperated!
This is our last cattle sale for 2026 this weekend, so if you are looking for something to do, come and check it out and have a nice lunch at our canteen. Sale time is 8:30 a.m.
Our 4-H Awards Night is booked for Nov. 13. If you want to attend, reach out to Tracey at 807-275-7180.
Congratulations to Aaron Bujold and Rustin Chartier for their successful weekend with their cattle at Manitoba Ag Ex! They represented the district very well.
