New OPP officers arriving in Emo

Fort Frances OPP S/Sgt. Hugh Dennis presented the OPP’s business plan to Emo council at its last regular council meeting Aug. 29.
On Oct. 1, four new officers will report to the Emo detachment—two senior officers and two probationary ones, S/Sgt. Dennis reported.
Emo OPP came in under budget this year, partly owing to the reduction in personnel. Local officers also were assigned to high-profile national and provincial events, including the G-8 summit in Kananaskis in late June and World Youth Day in Toronto in late July.
Local communities are not charged for the time officers spend on special assignments.
Emo’s total complement is 14 officers. There are 18 in Fort Frances, six in Rainy River, and four in Atikokan.
Emo council also has been invited to the grand opening of the new Rainy River OPP office on Sept. 19.
OPP Commissioner Gwen Boniface will be on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
“The office will have holding cells so First Nations and Rainy River officers won’t have to drive to Emo,” S/Sgt. Dennis noted.
