A warm meal and a welcoming place at the table will be on offer in Fort Frances this Friday, as Grand Council Treaty #3 prepares to host another community lunch.
The latest A Meal for All event will take place on Oct. 23, from noon to 3 p.m., at the Kaakewaaseya Justice and Wiisokotatiwin Services Building, located at 516 Portage Ave.
Spaghetti will be on the menu, with organizers extending an invitation to all members of the community.
Grand Council Treaty #3 previously promoted a Sept. 25 gathering featuring homestyle chilli, followed by hamburger macaroni soup lunch on Oct. 2.
The lunches are organized through the Kaakewaaseya Justice Department and Wiisokotatiwin team, whose work focuses on supporting individuals and communities across Treaty #3 territory.
These community meal events come amid growing concerns about food insecurity across Northwestern Ontario.
According to the Northwestern Health Unit, one in five households in its service area, which includes the Rainy River District, experienced food insecurity in 2024.
Locally, the Salvation Army food bank reported assisting 807 individuals across 463 households during the first eight months of 2026, with demand approaching the previous year’s levels.
Wiisokotatiwin translates from Anishinaabemowin as “standing together and supporting one another,” reflecting the spirit of community and inclusion emphasized in the event’s promotion.
“Everyone deserves a warm meal and a welcoming place at the table,” Grand Council Treaty #3 stated in its event announcement.
Anyone interested in attending can visit 516 Portage Ave. between noon and 3 p.m. on Friday, October 23. No registration is required ahead of time. For further information, contact Wiisokotatiwin@treaty3.ca.
