On Thursday, Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford was on hand to announce nearly $300,000 in funding for projects across the Rainy River District.

The Borderland Racing Association is receiving over $100,000 for improvements to the Emo Speedway. Upcoming improvements to the speedway include washroom renovations, modernization of canteen equipment, purchase of picnic tables and other site amenities, and fencing, lighting, electrical and sound system upgrades.

Borderland Racing Association president Tammy Strachan says the funds will help make important improvements to the facility for drivers, fans and volunteers.

“This funding will allow us to make much-needed upgrades to our facility, including improvements to our electrical system, fencing, sound system, canteen and other infrastructure. These investments will improve safety and the overall experience for our drivers, volunteers, fans and families, while helping ensure Emo Speedway continues to be a strong community attraction for years to come.”

Strachan said at the track on Thursday that safety fencing on the eastern side of the track will be a big part of the additions, as race teams are often now parking along that part of the track as teams come with larger RVs that don’t all fit in the pits on big race weekends.

In Rainy River, Rickford announced $180,000 to renovate the Legion’s Major Hughes Branch #54. The kitchen, bathrooms, and social area will all be upgraded to make the facility more efficient and accessible.

First Vice-President of the Rainy River Legion Heather Pilcher said the improvements will help the facility remain an inviting space for the community.

“These improvements will enhance our facility and help us continue providing a welcoming and accessible space for our members and the broader community for years to come,” she said.

Renovations include new flooring in the kitchen and social area, as well as a new stove in the kitchen.

“For generations, the Emo Speedway and the Royal Canadian Legion, Major Hughes Branch #54 have been places where people come together, build connections and celebrate the strength of our communities,” Rickford said.

“We’re proud to support these community assets with critical upgrades and modernization, ensuring both can continue to serve veterans, residents and visitors. Through the NOHFC, we’re investing in the places that bring people together and build stronger, more vibrant communities across Northwestern Ontario.”
