‘Harvest Festival’ cancelled again

FORT FRANCES—Just as the Business Improvement Area was about to announce it was going ahead with its second-annual “Harvest Festival” next Saturday, the event was cancelled again due to the repair work Scott Street.
It initially had been scheduled for Sept. 14.
“It’s a safety issue,” said BIA co-ordinator Laurie Beadle. “We can’t get stores on board because of the safety concerns with the construction going on.”
Beadle added the BIA hasn’t decided whether it will take another shot at staging the event after the street repairs are complete, which should be by the second week in October.
Event organizers would not have gotten permission to close Scott Street, but events would have been held in the open areas still left around the 100-300 blocks.
Besides sidewalk sales, the festival was slated to include a corn roast, dancers and other entertainment, a pie contest similar to the cookie contest held during “Mall Day” back in June, a best scarecrow contest, and a wood carvers’ display.
Other planned events included a karaoke contest, balloons, face-painting, a tots’ corner with toys, crafts at the museum, a scavenger hunt, and an inflatable slide and bouncer.
