Sadly the family announces the passing of Alvin Copenace, 79, of Big Grassy First Nation on September 14, 2026, at the La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
Alvin was born in Red Lake, Minn., U.S.A., on January 25, 1947. He was self-employed for many years working in the logging industry. Alvin was also a former Chief of Big Grassy First Nation and he held strong traditional values.
He will be greatly missed by his children Jim (Jeanette), Clayton, Denise (Jordie); his brother Ernie; numerous grandchildren and extended family.
Alvin was predeceased by his parents; his children Sheila, Duane and Freddie; numerous siblings and extended family.
A traditional wake was held on Thursday, September 17, 2026, from 4 p.m. at the Big Grassy First Nation Community Hall followed by a traditional service on Friday, September 18, 2026, at 10 a.m. Interment followed in Big Grassy First Nation Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Curtis Copenace, Cody Copenace, Buck Morrison, Steven Magiskan, Nathan Jack Jr., Brian Hook.
Arrangements entrusted to Northridge Funeral Home Ltd., Emo, Ontario.
