A Kenora Park employee who pulled a struggling toddler from Lake of the Woods has been formally recognized for her actions.
Camryn Dewar received a Lifesaving Society Rescue Award of Merit following the July 1, 2025, rescue near the Anicinabe Park boat launch.
Dewar was leaving to go fishing with her father when she saw the toddler struggling in water over her head. No adult was immediately beside the child.

Dewar first threw a life jacket toward the toddler and called for her to grab it. When the child could not grab on, Dewar jumped into the water and swam her to safety.
“I didn’t really think about it — I just reacted,” Dewar said. “I saw her struggling and ran as fast as I could, and actually cut my foot open on a rock during the rescue. I’m just glad my dad and I happened to be right there to help her.”
Dewar works in guest services at Kenora’s Anicinabe Park & Campground. She is also a former member of 301 Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets, a ski patroller and an international opera singer and musician.
The Rescue Award of Merit recognizes people who show resourcefulness and courage while helping someone in distress.
“It happened in a matter of seconds — that’s how quickly a situation like this can turn,” said Heather Campbell-Dewar, park manager and operations lead at Anicinabe Park.
“Camryn didn’t hesitate, and her actions saved someone’s life. We are incredibly proud of her.”
The rescue has also prompted the park to remind families how quickly emergencies can develop around water.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to keep young children within arm’s reach and designate an attentive “water spotter” who is free from phones and other distractions.
