The public is invited to the Fort Frances Airport on Sunday evening for a special display of motorcycle prowess.
The Ontario Provincial Police’s (OPP) Golden Helmets Precision Motorcycle Team will be coming to town this Sunday evening, Sept. 6, to demonstrate their skills and abilities. The show is scheduled to get underway at 6 p.m. and will give members of the public a chance to see the squadron in action.
According to the OPP, the Golden Helmets are a 20-member team of frontline OPP officers who ride a fleet of Harley-Davidson Police Specials. The officers have each completed the Police Motorcycle Operator basic course and at least one season on motorcycle patrol, and they ride bikes used for frontline duties.
The bikes themselves have 1,868 cc engines and weigh roughly 800 pounds.
“During each 30-minute performance, the riders take their motorcycles through a series of complex patterns, which are intended to demonstrate the maneuverability of the motorcycle and the riders’ skills,” said Rainy River District OPP Cadet Charlie Lafond.
The Fort Frances show caps off the Golden Helmets’ tour through northwestern Ontario, which will begin with a show in Thunder Bay on Thursday, Sept. 3, and will also see stops in Sioux Lookout, Dryden and Kenora.
