SIOUX LOOKOUT – A new fireworks bylaw will soon take effect in Sioux Lookout, only allowing the use of fireworks without a permit on specific days of the year.
These specific days include three days before and after Canada Day, the Saturday immediately before or after Diwali, and New Year’s Eve.
Starting on Sept. 17, fireworks are allowed on these days, or on others with a permit, between dusk and 11 p.m. For New Year’s, however, they are allowed until 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 1.
According to CAO Brian MacKinnon, the bylaw was “informed by concerns, complaints, and feedback received from residents regarding fireworks use within the community.”
He said the concerns ranged from noise impacts to fire hazards to property damage.
“Staff also considered the elevated wildfire risks associated with recreational fireworks use in a boreal forest community such as Sioux Lookout, particularly during periods of drought, active forest fires, burn bans, Restricted Fire Zones, or other heightened fire risk conditions,” said MacKinnon.
He continued that the municipality recognizes how important fireworks can be to celebrations, but the bylaw “was developed with the goal of finding a reasonable balance between those interests while establishing clear and consistent rules for everyone.”
If residents wish to get a firework permit, they can apply through the municipal permitting process. The Residents are being encouraged to apply well in advance to leave time for the fire chief or designate to review the factors.
If fireworks are used during prohibited times or locations, or if firecrackers or sky lanterns are used at all, fines range from $300 to $500.
MacKinnon added that more details will be available on the website as it gets closer to the date the bylaw takes effect.
Sioux Lookout is not the only municipality that has tightened their firework laws.
Kenora only allows fireworks on New Years Eve and Day, Victoria Day, Labour Day, Canada Day and U.S. Independence Day.
In Fort Frances, fireworks are completely banned. The town hosts a firework show led by professionals on Canada Day.
