Alton Cates

The family of Alton Cates announces his peaceful passing on August 17, 2026, at LaVerendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ontario.

Alton was born in Emo, Ontario, on March 30, 1945, to Francis and Rose (Meline) Cates. Left to cherish his memory are his sister Margaret (Sonny); brothers Elmer (Helen) and Carl; nephews Keith (Trish) Cates, Kevin Cates, and Greg (Lisa) Ferris; nieces Kim Cates, Nancy (Scott) Gobeil, and Brenda (Mike) Sinclair; along with numerous cousins, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents Francis and Rose Cates; his brother, Ross Cates; and his sister-in-law, Faye Cates. Alton worked many years as a cattle farmer on the Cates farm alongside his brother Carl. His employment also included Roste’s Bakery and Pipestone Lodge.

Alton loved being around people and loved to talk. He could always find someone to have a conversation with, and if no one was around, he was perfectly content talking to himself or quietly whistling.

Alton attended Off Lake Church every Sunday and would often stay for not one, but two services. For many years, he arrived early to make sure the sidewalks were swept or shoveled, always willing to lend a helping hand. Alton enjoyed spending time over coffee at Cloverleaf or Tim Horton’s with his brother, Elmer, and many friends. He would also take a daily drive to his sister Margaret’s house for a visit and possibly a nap. He was also well known for his leisurely drives around the area. If you happened to be behind him, you quickly learned that Alton was never in a hurry. Alton was known for his numerous quirks and nicknames for everybody. He had a quiet way about him, but those who knew him well appreciated his unique sense of humour and his love of conversation. Whether sharing a coffee with friends, visiting family, or taking his leisurely drive down the road, Alton had a way of doing things that was uniquely his own. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
